"I had major problems with aligning my LXD-55 SN8.
I purchase the TelRad which gives me a large display with a red target. It only cost me $55 and made astronomy so much easier. I also took off the cheap finder scope and trashed it."

"Nice work on the page! It gave me a real sense as to what to expect in an LXD55. I´m going to buy an 8" SN next weekend and I think I´m prepared in as what things MIGHT fail, preventing the unexpected. As a conclusion after reading a major part of this page and other reviews as well, I can say2 things:
The major PRO: very good optics.
The major CON: chance of getting a faulty mount."

"Got my AR-6 on Oct. 30 after a wait of only five days -- cudos to B @ H Photo -- and was thoroughly jazzed. Because of stormy Northern California weather, I've only had a couple of good nights for view and spent both on the moon, with startling results. I can't wait for Meade to send my other eyepieces since the 26mm is way insufficient for DSO. I'm also waiting for Astrosky to ship my Eliminator tripod. By the time all the goodies get here, I should have the Autostar mastered. I recommend downloading the "Virtual Moon Atlas," which puts most of the books out there to shame. Clear skies!"

"I've been tossing up weather to buy a 10" LXD55. Reading different reveiws have so far tipped the ballance one way and the other. After having a look at the images produced by members in the gallery and reading the guest book contents I am now convinced that this is the one for me. I am sure my ToUcam SC1 will get on well with this telescope.
Best regards to all from South wales, UK.
P.S. Keep up the good work."

"I have been into Astronomy since I could realize the Heavens and Earth. I bought my first scopein 1988 from Celestron. It was a Starbright C8 on a fork mount. Then I couldn't resist buyng a 3" Florite lens refractor, also from Celestron. Years later after recovering from my work related back injury, I just purchased a LXD55-SN 10" from Meade about 20 days ago. I love the fast F4 optics, but the telescope has suffered some damages during shipping (perhaps) and so Meade is going to replace it for me. I would like to know more about Hyper tunning since my primary reasons are Astrophotography. Looking forward to be a member.

Sam"

"Just received my SN10. Now all I have to do is master autostar. When I tried to slew to vega and it pointed to my van in the driveway, I knew I had to find some help. This site looks great. If anyone can help me get autostar adjusted and working correctly, I would greatly appreciate it. I have tried many times to follow the user manual but I am obviously still stuck. The scope works great when I just look around but I want to do more than that.

"I recently posted to say that my SN-10 was on its way... I've now got it and I've just had my first proper night with it! Had some fantastic views of M81, M82, M51, M13, Jupiter and Saturn. Well worth the money. M13 looked fabulous, the scope easily resolved all the way to the centre of the cluster. My girlfriend seemed impressed with M82 as well, which is good!
The tips on this page are very very good, especially the one reccomending spending time on a decent alignment using the polar viewfinder. Once I'd done that the GOTO worked really well."

"Just got my SN-10 last Thursday after a 3 month wait. Took it out for first light last night and was pleasantly surprised at the optics (especially since I was viewing from a densly populated part of Philadelphia!) The only trouble this scope has given me was a stripped bolt on the OTA mounting bracket. A quick and easy replacement.
I've ordered the Meade eyepieces although they haven't arrived yet. Even with just the 26mm that comes with the scope the clarity was more than I expected. I used a lot of tricks and tips that were posted on this board, so a huge thanks to everyone for making my first purchase of a "real" scope that much easier. Hopefully in the future I'll have some tips of my own to share. Clear skies, all!"

"Very informative site!! It has helped me narrow my decision to the one 'scope that meets my enthusiam and my pocketbook. I am about to place my order, in the next day or so, for a Meade SN-8 UHTC. This will be my first REAL telescope and I can hardly wait to see it's first light. My first 'scope was a very old (1930's) 3" refractor spotting scope left to me by my dad. He was a coach for the U.S. Rifle Team back then, and used it for checking targeting accuracies during matches. It gave me my first views of Saturn, Jupiter, etc. but had a lot of coma and major chromatic abberation (lousy coatings and lots of wear & tear). Stars were miniature rainbows and galaxies and nebulae were absolutely out of the question. Nonetheless, it was a thrilling sight. The astronomy bug hit me nearly 40 years ago and now that I have the time and the procrastination has worn off, I finally decided to bite the bullet and start to get serious. I have been accumulating scientific instrumentation over the years in anticipation of the scope I would use for many experiments. These include a Jarrel-Ash 3 meter Ebert monochromator (1 angstrom resolution), an assortment of photometric eyepieces (these have a fiber-optic light guide in the center of the optical path to sample part of the image, quite rare) and can be coupled directly to my photomultiplier units (for variable stars, mag comparisons, etc.) or to the monochromator for spectral studies. I am also very excited by the new strides in using a webcam for astrophotos. I bought a $99 webcam just on a whim because it seemed really cool and versatile, not realizing at the time that there was all sorts of software out there that could process the images thru telescopes (stacking, aligning, integrating, etc.) What Great Fun! I was really put off by the tedium of precise hand guiding and the expense of conventional CCD imaging and autoguiding, but if this new technique can provide even mediocre results I will be overjoyed. At least it will be lightyears ahead (pun intended)of what I am used to, yet I have a lot to learn and a lot of new toys. "

"Enjoy the group, very informative at times...
I have the AR6, from day one it worked as advertised. I suspect the problems expressed in this group are reasonable as in any product in this price range.
I have a LX200 and it's success is a result of hundreds of modifications by end users, not by the company. I think this forum of very clever amateurs will in the end make this product one to have and own for a long time to come, especially for the price.

After much agonising and waiting for the 10" UHTC scope to arrive here in Australia, it arrived a few weeks before Xmas. Being a newbie, there is still much to learn (and I guess there allways will). I have only one problem. When I pack it in the car I have no room for the tent. I guess I need a 4WD -can be an expensive hobby this one I think!

"Got my SN10 after a 7 month wait. Missed two star parties and the best weather for this part of the country. (Montana) Have had the scope out once, and it is impressive. The only thing I am going to do is build a pier in the backyard that I can get the mount attached to firmly. A finely balanced scope runs smooth, and even though the mount isn't the best, it's still worth it. I agree with the cold weather advice wholeheartedly.

"Stuff I didn't know I'd need/want:
I'm a telescope newbie and purchased the SN 8" last summer. I was surprised at the many additional items needed to support my new scope, just to make it work well. I'm hoping I can save someone else some frustration:
Battery: ($30-$70) The d-cell pack that comes with the scope was not powerful enough for me to maintain Autostar alignment. Buy a 12V rechargable pack with at least two 12V plug-ins. Splice the wire from the d-cell pack to the wire from the 12V input. If you plan to use the scope in subfreezing temps, get the biggest power pack you can find.
Dew Control: ($200) I didn't realize that the corrector plate, eyepiece, and finder would fog/frost up so easily. I tried making a home-made shield with velcro strips and thin, black foam sheets from Michaels Craft store for the corrector plate, but the eyepiece and finder still fogged, and so did the corrector. I finally gave in and bought a Kendrick heater system. I works great, but I just learned it really sucks the juice when temps are below freezing. I'm now wrapping the outsides of the corrector plate heater and eyepiece heater to hold in the heat.
Finder: ($40) After several months of trying to stand on my head :P and trying to keep the finder aligned with those 6 little screws :O, I purchased a Rigel Quik Finder, and stopped using the finder scope. It's easy to align and easy to look thru at various distances. I've recently removed the finder scope completely and have drilled holes in the Rigel base and attached the Rigel using the two finder base bolts.
Additional eyepieces (and barlow $40): ($200+each)I've learned in the short period I've had the scope, that to get the most out of the existing optics, you can't skrimp on eyepieces. Buy the best to get the best view. You really only need two or three and a barlow. It's better to have one good eyepiece, than a case full of cheap ones. Televue Radians and Panoptics are highly recommended.
Filters: ($15-$50) I use the moon filter very often. The SkyGlow occasionally.
Other stuff: Red flashlight, blanket (for ground cover), skycharts, tech case, eyeglasses strap, bug spray, and a chair.
The most important thing I've learned about the LXD55 is: The more often I use it, the easier and more fun it is. I love my LXD55!!! "

"Great site! Very useful for someone considering buying an lxd55 such as myself - a lot of my questions were immediately answered. My local Meade dealer doesn't have one on the floor to look at, so this is as close as I can get. Thank you!
I do have some questions about Autostar's capabilities. One: How accurate does the polar alignment have to be in order for Autostar to work? Second: On my current EQ mounted scope, since I don't do much much tracking I set the latitude on the mount to 0 or 90 degrees, essentially turning it into an alt-azimuth mount, for point-and-shoot navigation. This has the added bonus of keeping the eyepiece orientation constant, so I don't have to rotate the tube to get a comfortable look. Does anyone know if Autostar is capable of functioning in this configuration?
Thanks!
Robert"

"14 sept 2002
I bought my LXD55 10" SN UHTC at Analytical Scientific (in which I got a very good service)in San Antonio this August. I live in Mexico and I had to travel all the way by land to that city because dealers can't export Meade products. It was a very nice experience for us. Imagine more than a 1500 km of traveling in a bus with a 10 inch telescope. ;) I'm very pleased with my new telescope, but here in my city there had been to this date only like 4 clear nights. That really bothers me."

"Gretz from Oz (Australia),
I bought a 10" lxd55 from Astro Optical (Crows Nest) here in Syd, and I can (and will) fully recomend these guys for all your 'scope needs (again, here in Syd).
Having only had my scope now for about a week I've only had one look at a dark sky with it, and I have to say 1ne word sums it up; WOW! I never imagined how a 10" could resolve such detail! I havn't yet used to 'Guided Tour' but I hope to this weekend.
Great work on site guys; chock full o' goodness, and good to the last drop. Although (not that it would have made *any* difference, cause I still would have bought it) I wish it was around a few months ago ... I could have used the advice!
Cheers,
sog"

"Today... finally, after much ado over *everything*, I ordered an LXD55 SN 8" from the Discovery Channel store. I started out looking at the 6" SN, but then, got some more gift points from my employer... SO... I now upped the ante to the 8". Is there any need to use a red dot scope with this outfit? or is the finder scope provided very adequate? Thanks for the info on the dew shields. I was worried that there were't many options for 8" instruments. Hold onto that price for a while, if you can... I can't run out and get telescope AND accessories instantaneously...!

" Thanks for creating this site. I have been looking at the LXD55 SN 10" in ads in the back of Sky and Telescope all year. I am an avid variable star observer, becoming more interested in them all the time, and I think this could be a big improvement over my old but venerable 6" f/10 Newt. I would like to know how faint people have been able to see with the 10" scope, and also get an idea what the field of view is like under different eyepiece powers. Also, though I know this is designed more as a deep-sky scope than a planetary one, I would love to hear how the Moon and planets look in the 10". Any replies are welcome.

" DONT KNOW WHAT TO SAY
I went out and bought the LXD55 SN 8" about a week ago. It had been
sitting in the window at our local optomatrist office for about a
month.I drove past there every day and wished for it sooo bad. I
finally took half of my coin collection and sold it and used the
money for the scope.I have been playing with it all week and finally
really got to use it tonight. I did the one star align and set it on
high precision put in my meade 8mm - 24mm zoom eyepiece and took the
guided tour. I saw everything from Andromeda Galaxy to the ring
nebula. I cannot believe how the Auto Star was able to pick each
Item out of the sky. The images were alot better than I thought they
would be, so all I can say is this is a AWESOME scope!!!!! So now it
looks like there is another newbie astronomer out there.

"If you have questions about the mount or the 10"SN you can email me at alanprowse@hotmail.c... Purchased the 10"SN. This is my four telescope in 25 years. I will do a full review in the future, but briefly it is a lot of telescope for the money. The telescope arrived undamaged with no speckles on the mirror or corrector plate. The QC may have improved recently. The telescope is very well designed and engineered. The mount can handle the weight of that big heavy 10" OTA, but the mount Must be balanced well on both axis to avoid strain and Autostar inaccuracies. The dampening down time on the GOTO slew mode is only 1 second and 2 to 3 seconds on max speed (9). I did use rubber suppression pads under each leg. As long as the mount is balanced well Autostar performs very well. Every object dead centred, but training the drive at 45 degrees is important along with good levelling, time and location. I'm an international purchaser and there is some evidence to suggest that not all tripods are equal. International orders may have a superior tripod, the unit cost is definitely higher. Thanks to Richard for this site, very professional and informative.
